The trip home was late and the darkness of night limited our birdwatching. Not an ideal time for birdwatching. But my urban colleague remarked about shadows and shapes in the trees and fields. By moonlight she soon began to observe the edges of fields and forest. Once she imagined the edges as urban intersections, she could see more, as if in the city lots of commuters gathered at a stoplight waiting for it to change before they moved. The life of the humans was linked to proper street crossing skills. So also is the life of a small mammal dependent upon a bird of prey notices its motion.[end snippet”>
